PAULINE KNIGHT (1925-2019)
At the end of September there was a sea of colourful flowers in hair and buttonholes as we bid farewell to Pauline Knight. Though over recent years she had lost her confidence and didn’t make church services John ensured a regular visit every month. The congregation at the funeral contained a number of people from different areas of her life, whether it be church members, neighbours and friends or representatives from the antiques world. Pauline was a fund of stories and knowledge, particularly over ceramics.
She was born in Dover and aged five won a talent contest. Subsequently she performed both on stage and on the BBC and at aged 12 joined the Ovaltineys. During the war, as a member of ENSA, she performed round the camps to boost morale. At aged 20 she met Dennis in Stockport and they were married for 38 years. Mother to Gilly, the late Marion and the late Ted; grandmother and great Grandmother.
Locally she was a member of the Luncheon Club and served, amongst other ways, as Churches Together representative for All Saints’ for a number of years. As she once wrote in the Matlock Mercury, “I’ve had a very happy life that’s been most exciting.”
As we go to press, news has come through of the death of Joyce Davey – a tribute will be posted in the next edition.
