Dear Friends,

Those who take the time to look at the weekly pew sheet will know that beyond the regular typos and mistakes, I try to find a quote for reflecting on through the coming week. Some quotes are taken from ancient writers and others more up to date; some well-known and others more obscure, but all reflect that desire to come to a living relationship with the Creator God.

This month we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity; the great mystery that lies at the heart of our Faith, that God has revealed Godself to be One God yet three Divine Persons. Every year we try and explore that mystery some more, but as we delve deeper into the knowledge of a Love so intense that it unites Father, Son and Holy Spirit perfectly, we are led to that place where words and language fall silent in adoration. For as Michael Ramsey once remarked, the truly amazing thing is not that there is One God yet Three Divine Persons but that God should love each one of us with so deep a passion as to desire us to enter into eternal communion with the Divine.

Our worship, week by week, Sunday by Sunday, is not a case of turning up to a weekly club of like-minded people, but rather it is about the offering of ourselves, our whole being to the Lord. Worship is not about ‘my spiritual fix’ but is about bringing the whole of ourselves, imperfect as we are, as an offering of praise and thanksgiving to the Almighty.

William Temple once wrote this, “Worship is the submission of all of our nature to God.
It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness,
Nourishment of mind by His truth,
Purifying of imagination by His beauty,
Opening of the heart to His love,
And submission of will to his purpose.
And all this gathered up in adoration is the greatest of human expressions of which we are capable.”

And I would add, enabled by our faith in Him from His grace to us by His Spirit of truth because of His love for us seen in His Son Jesus Christ.”

Worship is also about transformation. This transforming is not only one of our vision and understanding of God as we explore the mystery of the Divine but also a transformation of us through the action of the Holy Spirit. By spending time in the Divine Presence, we are to be transformed; changed from glory into glory, as the rough edges of our lives are smoothed and polished.

Rowan Williams in his book, ‘Being Disciples’ (p.82f), writes - “We need to ask whether we come to prayer, and try to live as Christ’s disciples, in the expectation of being stretched. Do I expect there to be a bit more of me at the end of a period of prayer or worship than there was at the beginning? Because that is really what it’s about – whether there will be a little more of me afterwards. Or, to change the metaphor, will God have cleared away some of the clutter during that time and created a little more space there for his life?”

Sunday by Sunday we come intentionally to seek encounter with the Living Lord; Creator, Risen Saviour, Transforming Spirit. We come to offer ourselves in love and thanksgiving, not for what we can get our of the time of worship but what we can bring.

We breathe in a rhythm, in and out. Oceans are in rhythm with the cycle of the moon in the cosmic music of the ebb & flow of the tide. God within the Trinity lives in a silent pulse of love, a going forth in self-emptying love for the Other & a waiting to receive one’s uniqueness in the love returned through the mutual Spirit of love. God in our Baptism, implants this divine rhythm into the core of our being. True prayer is tuning in to God’s breathing into us His love & breathing us out as co-creators with God of a new world”

[G.Maloney, ‘Why not become totally fire?’, 1989, p.53]

Every blessing

Part of the Rector’s Report…

So, what lie ahead in the coming year?

There lie the opportunities presented by new housing developments that are already spreading round the town (The new Rectory being on one of them – We must note that the old Vicarage next to the Church, which has been in use since 1912 was sold within two weeks of going on the open market. It is particularly pleasing that the whole building is to be renovated as a family home) and we can pray that new residents might feel drawn to be part of the local Christian fellowships. There is the opportunity presented by the Bank Road Messy Church and the ongoing Family Service Worship, engaging with young families. Work with the Schools, Care Homes and developing our system of pastoral care for the lonely are another priority. Our challenge remains as always in the size and age profile of the congregation, and the ongoing pressures of finance – the PCC recently welcomed David Meredith from the Diocese to talk about the Parish Giving Scheme, which will be decided upon at the May Meeting. We look to welcome and encourage new members as we seek to discern and develop God’s vision for All Saints’ Church & how to develop the facilities to the glory of God & for the benefit of local residents. We mustn’t lose sight of the truth that our primary calling is to the worship of God & to enable others to encounter the Divine Love, grace & mercy, that they too might become disciples of the Lord.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your good wishes to me and my family as we moved out of the old Vicarage into the new Rectory. Life is still full of boxes to be emptied and sorted, adjusting to the new reality & trying to get organised. Familiar objects are finding new homes whilst we also learn to adjust to a different situation, plus the increased commute to work!

I suppose in a roundabout way, that must have been how the disciples felt in the light of the events of Easter Sunday. All of them were now having to adjust their way of thinking to a new reality; that of the Risen Christ. The Jesus that they had journeyed with over the years, whom they’d listened to and watched perform miracles; the one whom in their fear, they had abandoned and seen nailed to the cross, was once more with them physically, and yet transformed to a new level of being.

No longer would they be able to go about their lives in the same way. Nor could they continue to view the world and life in the same way: the religious authorities had for the most part been exposed as self-serving & self-preserving, even to the point of condemning an innocent man to be sent to his death. In the figure of the Risen Lord the new creation was being born and the kingdom of God breaking into the world. The resurrection of Jesus was the Divine Affirmation of His earthly ministry; His words and actions. Above all, through the death and resurrection of Jesus, God’s love and mercy for creation is revealed.

Mind-blowing stuff for those first followers to come to terms with, but it led to transformation and a renewed energy and focus to spread the Good News throughout the world, even at the cost of witnessing with their lives.

Thankfully in this country we don’t face the same dangers that the first disciples did, nor do we face the prospect of persecution and martyrdom as so many Christians round the world do, even to this day. But, we too are called to be transformed by our knowledge of and our encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. The Christian Church fails when it forgets its vocation to reach out and tell the story of God’s love for the world revealed in Christ. We can never afford to be complacent because God calls us to be transformational in our society and enable people to encounter the Word of God and to recognise the Lord at work in their own lives.

The Easter story is one that tells the triumph of life over death; of love over hate; of hope over despair. Alleluia! Christ is risen!

He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Every blessing this Easter-tide

Richard

Dear Friends

As Easter is late this year the beginning of Lent isn’t till 6th March when we celebrate the liturgy for Ash Wednesday. Each year the old palm crosses are gathered up & burned to create the ash (And be warned, burning palm crosses make a tremendous smell through the house, so leave the window open!). This ash is then mixed with a drop of oil & then used to anoint the foreheads of individual Christians with the words “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ”.

The ash reminds us of our mortality, that we are made up of a collection of atoms that one day will return to the earth, but that in Christ we have the promise of an existence beyond this life and that through our Lord, death and decay will not have the final word. In Jesus Christ the Risen Lord, we have the promise of resurrection – “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

The ash is also symbolic of penitence, that in ages past people would put on sackcloth and ashes as a sign of wanting to make amends for wrongs done. Lent is the penitential season, echoing Jesus’ time in the wilderness when he faced different temptations as how to exercise power. Whether by fasting from something or taking up a spiritual discipline (or both!), Lent is a time to discipline ourselves and make time for God.

The ash is formed from burnt palm branches, reminding us of the events of Holy Week when Jesus was welcomed into the Holy City by crowds cheering and throwing palm fronds in front of Him, and yet a few days later the same crowds were crying out, “Crucify him!”. As human beings we can be fickle and we need God’s grace and mercy, constantly turning afresh to the Lord and away from the things we do and say that are destructive.

The ash is used to make the sign of the cross, reminding us of our baptism when we were marked with the symbol of God’s family. The cross is the sign of salvation and the reassurance of the depths of God’s saving love towards us.

May we be enabled to keep a holy Lent and deepen our relationship with our Living Lord, and may we come to know the depths of God’s love towards us.

Every blessing

Richard

Dear Friends

A new year brings with it signs of change (I will studiously avoid any mention of national politics!) and lighter nights – as I write this, the Easter eggs have already begun to appear on the shelves! As a Diocese we are about to experience a big change with the announcement of our new Diocesan Bishop. The next Bishop of Derby is to be the Rt. Revd. Libby Lane, who was the first woman to be consecrated as a Bishop in the Church of England and who since then has served as Bishop of Stockport in Chester Diocese. Once Bishop Libby is enthroned / installed in her cathedra in Derby, then she will bring a fresh perspective and a new set of eyes to study the challenges facing our Diocese. We will see where she discerns our priorities lie and where resources should be directed. Above all, Bishop Libby will need our prayers in this time of transition, as well as prayers for Bishop Jan and all the senior leadership team.

Closer to home there is change on its way, sometime late March. After 106 years of faithful service the Vicarage is to be sold along with the flat in Far Green that was separated off from the main house in 1964. Undoubtedly it will seem strange for the Vicarage to no longer be used as such, but we pray that the future owners will be able to upgrade and cherish the building in the ways that it now needs. The new Rectory is almost complete on the new Treetops development which lies between Asker Lane and the Presentation Sisters Care Home. The advantage for the Diocese and for present and future incumbents, will be a modern, well-insulated (Warm!) building with an easily maintained garden, which will be cheaper and more efficient to run. Moving house, even just round the corner, is a stressful affair, so your prayers are gratefully requested for us at this time.

Lots happening, but against a backdrop of the faithfulness of our Lord, in Whose Loving Presence, we live and move and have our being.

Every blessing

Richard

PS A useful prayer for times of political instability & upheaval:

God of reconciling hope,
as you guided your people in the past
guide us through the turmoil of the present time
and bring us to that place of flourishing
where our unity can be restored,
the common good served
and all shall be made well.
In the name of Jesus we pray.Amen.
