PAULINE KNIGHT (1925-2019)

At the end of September there was a sea of colourful flowers in hair and buttonholes as we bid farewell to Pauline Knight. Though over recent years she had lost her confidence and didn’t make church services John ensured a regular visit every month. The congregation at the funeral contained a number of people from different areas of her life, whether it be church members, neighbours and friends or representatives from the antiques world. Pauline was a fund of stories and knowledge, particularly over ceramics.

She was born in Dover and aged five won a talent contest. Subsequently she performed both on stage and on the BBC and at aged 12 joined the Ovaltineys. During the war, as a member of ENSA, she performed round the camps to boost morale. At aged 20 she met Dennis in Stockport and they were married for 38 years. Mother to Gilly, the late Marion and the late Ted; grandmother and great Grandmother.

Locally she was a member of the Luncheon Club and served, amongst other ways, as Churches Together representative for All Saints’ for a number of years. As she once wrote in the Matlock Mercury, “I’ve had a very happy life that’s been most exciting.”

As we go to press, news has come through of the death of Joyce Davey – a tribute will be posted in the next edition.

Parish Giving Scheme

At a recent meeting the PCC of All Saints’ agreed to sign up to the Parish Giving Scheme following a presentation by David Meredith from the Diocesan Finance Department. Over the summer and autumn we will be contacting all those who give on a regular basis to the church, inviting them to consider joining the scheme.

Why are we promoting the PGS in our church?

The Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) uses Direct Debits to provide us with a modern, convenient, elegant and secure method of making regular donations to our church. By using Direct Debits, the PGS offers us the

option automatically to increase our donations by inflation each year. This is a 21st century solution to offset one of the greatest problems of local church income – ‘static giving’. Also, we can remain anonymous if

we prefer. Although some of us may be wary of Direct Debits, they are protected by

the Direct Debit Guarantee which makes it a very safe system. More information is available at www.directdebit.co.uk or www.financialombudsman.org.uk (search for ‘direct debit’).

How does the PGS help our church?

When we have joined the PGS, the PGS collects money from our bank accounts on the 1st of each month, and the total collected is remitted to our church bank account on or before the 10th of each month. The PGS

also automatically reclaims any Gift Aid from HMRC and remits this to our church bank account as soon as it is received.

As more of us join the PGS, it will reduce the time our volunteers spend on managing our church finances. Donations made through the PGS are easier to reconcile than Standing Orders or cash (e.g., through envelope schemes). Gift Aid is received each month, improving cashflow. Furthermore, with the option for an annual inflationary increase in donations, income to our church increases year on year.

Who operates the Parish Giving Scheme?

The PGS was initially developed, operated and managed by the Diocese of Gloucester. Now seventeen Church of England dioceses actively participate in the PGS. With the backing of The Archbishops’ Council, the Scheme became a church-run not-for-profit company in 2014 (Registered Charity 1156606). With nearly ten years’ experience, the PGS is well ‘bedded in’. The Diocese of Derby pays the marginal costs of participating in the PGS. There is NO additional cost for our church to participate in the PGS.

What happens at the Offertory?

Those of us who have joined the PGS can use PGS tokens to place on the plate or in the collection bag at the Offertory. The PGS tokens enable us to participate in the Offertory.

Dear Friends,

As some of you are aware, I recently spent a few days in Athens looking round the sights and sites. It was funny to reflect as I walked round as a tourist that over 1950 years ago St. Paul was doing the exact same thing. We read in Acts 17 that he looked round at the various sights of Athens, including the Parthenon and the Agora, before going up Mars Hill to the Areopagus. I hope health and safety was better in the first century because I found the area of the Areopagus rather slippery and dangerous! Paul went on to use the opportunity to share the Gospel message with a Greek audience, beginning from things they knew, familiar ideas and then guiding their thoughts towards the story of Jesus Christ.

There in the heart of the ancient world where philosophers like Plato and Socrates had debated their ideas, Paul took the message of mercy, grace and salvation. Paul was operating outside his usual comfort zone rather than seeking out the local Jewish community who would be familiar with the back story of God’s dealings with the world and in particular the people of Israel.

We live and witness in a not dissimilar age where at least three generations have grown up with limited encounter with the Christian Gospel. We can no longer assume that people are familiar with stories from the Bible, nor with what we would regard as ‘famous’ hymns and prayers. We are now in an ‘unchurched’ age in which, like Paul, we need to find opportunities and ways to communicate the Christian story in a language which the wider society can engage with.

As Christians we are not called to convert anyone. It’s God who ‘converts’, who moves hearts and minds to seek out the Truth. Our role is one of not getting in God’s way by thoughtless words and actions but rather by modelling community based on Christian values of respect, justice, mercy, self-giving love, mutual respect, tolerance and forgiveness. Quite a challenge but we have the promise of the Holy Spirit to inspire, empower and guide us.

Every blessing

Richard

IVY LANE (1921-2019)

A large congregation gathered on 30th May to bid farewell to our oldest member, Ivy Lane. She was a well-loved member of the 10.45am congregation, who despite the difficulties of increasing hearing loss, maintained a keen sense of humour with a lovely smile. She will also be remembered for her hat (which I told her needed a feather).

She was a native of Pentre in the Rhondda, who spent her early years round Ross on Wye & then Tewkesbury where she met her husband of 50 years, Dennis. They moved to Bakewell Road, Matlock when Dennis was demobbed after the war & Ivy got involved with All Saints’, helping with bazaars & was a member of Ladies Fellowship.

She had a great love of nature & eating out with friends, enjoying trips out round the countryside. May she rest in peace & rise in glory.
